- THE S.E.E CENTRE -

- PROGRAM -

The Plymouth Sustainable Energy Engineering Centre acts a conduit for knowledge between the students of Plymouth University and Plymouth’s city residents. With spaces for manufacture and research, the structure provides an initial site from which a new generation sustainable energy technology to emerge from the combined work of students of Plymouth University, local engineering firms and residents of the surrounding region who previously worked in industrial sector jobs.

This sectional perspective above portrays the daily activity and circulation within The S.E.E Centre.

- The Mayflower Street Regeneration Masterplan -

In our first semester of third year my group and I chose to bring a new life to the Mayflower Street car park and the surrounding commercial units as the built form of the area created many uncomfortable spaces that encourage antisocial activity and vandalism. The initial stage of development consisted of removing the car park which we knew would become defunct within the next 10 to 20 years as the local government and the UK government are making strives towards reducing private car ownership in dense city areas. Furthermore after completing studies of vehicle activity in the car park it was clear to us the space was underused and poorly maintained. The void created by removing the car park was daunting at first however we quickly and confidently realized that the new area could become the backdrop for a vibrant new cultural and residential district, providing a space in which people could dwell without having to spend money, greatly contrasting the surrounding city fabric. This new living space was supported by a skills sharing scheme that attempted to capture and retain graduates and their knowledge and also attempt to bridge the social and economic divide between city residents and students of the University and of Plymouth City College.
